Honeymoon fun

So,
nalroth and I will be departing for the sweet, sweet warmth of Hawaii's tropical shores come noon-ish tomorrow. Anyone have any recommendations for places we should go, things to see, adventures to have? We're planning on sticking to the main island, but depending on how the honeymoon goes we were contemplating taking a puddle-jumper to another island for a day or two.
Huge ginormous wedding post forthcoming!

You might consider the Pearl Harbor / USS Arizona Memorial.
Those would be the suggestions I can think of off the top of my head.

B) View the active Kilauea Volcano at Hawaii Volcano National Park, and take lots of pictures...
C) Also if you guys are up to it. where ever I go I try to try the indigenous foods for many reasons:
1)I am a chef
2)there is so much history behind these things/foods/people
3)you will never get it as good as from the source
Oh did you see the pics I put up?

Date: 2008-09-17 06:59 pm (UTC)There is also fantastic snorkling at Honauau beach, the cove adjacent to City of Refuge (Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park).
Magic Sands beach in Kona has some of the largest waves around - it's pretty much a natural wave pool. It's a very fun place to go swimming/body surfing/boogie boarding.
You are staying next to one of the most awesome snorkling/turle watching spots in Kona, Kahalu'u Beach Park. The adjacent Outrigger bar is one of the best places to relax with a drink and watch the sunset (and the sea turtles!).
Mauna Kea beach is beautiful, but very hard to get in to, you haaaaaaave to get there early. If Mauna Kea is full, ask for a parking pass to its adjacent beach called Mau'umae beach, which is also amazing. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is closed for renovations but both beaches are open. Avoid Hapuna beach, it's public and crowded.
Kona Brewery is totally worth visiting, the beer and pizza are delicious. You can tour the brewery at 10:30AM and 3PM, Monday through Friday.
There are also a lot of coffee farms near Kona you can visit, they're very cool.
If you get a chance, visit the Kona Farmer's Market and pick up some Kona peaberry coffee. There are also crazy tasty fresh fruits and vegetables available.

Date: 2008-09-18 06:54 am (UTC)If you're on Oahu, you should get to any of the other islands. Oahu sucks by comparison.
If on Hawai'i, you should definitely get over to see the active lava flows of Kilauea (assuming they are still active -- everything I can find quickly seems to indicate they are, but no idea how easy it'll be to see it -- we were able to just drive up the beach road until we couldn't go any further as the lava was flowing over the road ahead). I don't remember a lot else from the big island, so it can't have been all that interesting. ;)
Maui - Haleakala Crater is darn neat to hike inside if you're up for it. The Silver-Sword that grows there is rather pretty, and neat to see as well. The "seven sacred pools" were also pretty neat, even if it was named entirely to get tourists to visit.
Kaua'i - If you can get there, it was my favorite of the islands. The Zodiac boat tours of the Na Pali coast were really cool, and the trails along the coast were also amazing, along with the black sand beaches and sea caves. But then, I always was a geek. ;p
P.S. Although some may try to tell you the state bird is the Nene Goose, you will soon discover that the state bird is clearly known as the "Wappa Wappa" Bird. They're large, have rotating wings above them, and fly silly rich people all over the islands...
